The Boorowa Rovers travelled to Binalong on Saturday for their opening round clash against the Binalong Brahmans.
In what was anticipated to be a walk in the park for the home side, the Rovers went into the game thinking they could improve on their recent trial against the Brahmans in which they were beaten very convincingly.
The game started well for the Rovers, with a lot of purpose in both attack and defense and it was almost 20 minutes into the game before Binalong were able to break the defensive line to go in for their first try.
With the Rovers down 6-0 and the Binalong side attacking the try line some terrific defense by Shane Cross and Danny Baddock. The Rovers withstood this challenge and themselves marched up the paddock with some barnstorming runs by Sam Lyneham and Tommy Carnell enabling Shane Cross to score a wonderful team try to put the score at 6-4 with only ten minutes to go before half time.
At this stage the Boorowa side looked to be dominating the Brahmans but alas, with some very sloppy defense and a penalty count of 8-2 against, Binalong were able to score three more converted tries taking them to the half time break leading 24-4.
The Rovers started the second half with the same determination as the first and the pressure was again put on the Binalong attack with a lot of spilt ball due to the Rovers enthusiastic defense. Young guns Mick Elkins, Chris Mason and Justin Corkery were really applying the pressure to the Brahmans by sprinting out of the line and putting hits on the opposition that should be made by blokes twice their size. It took until the 12th minute of the second half for the Brahmans to score their next try and after this the flood gates began to open and with a penalty account of 15-3 to the home side and absolutely no football, the Rovers let in another four times, taking the full-time score to Binalong 60 Boorowa 4.
Although the whole side tried incredibly hard for the Rovers, the side was best served by Nathan Mathews, Tom Carnell, Brian Dwyer and Sam Lyneham in attack and Shane Cross, Mick Elkins, Chris Mason and Danny Baddock in defense.
For the Rovers, the player’s player was a joint decision going to Shane Cross and Mick Elkins. The three points went to Shane Cross, two points to Chris Mason and one point to Mick Elkins.
This weekend sees the Rovers play their first home game for almost four years, against the Crookwell Green Devils.
The game will be played at the Showground on Saturday April 17 at 3pm.
The Rovers would like to thank everyone that made the journey to Binalong to support them and hope it continues this weekend at the Boorowa Showground which should be a very entertaining game.
