Boorowa Rugby club have clawed their way back into second position on the Monaro Rugby Union table with a solid performance against the pride of Australia, the Royal Military College (RMC), at home on Saturday.
The win displaced RMC who had been on second place and leave Bungendore in outright first position. If Boorowa hold form for the remaining five matches there is no reason why they can’t reclaim the top spot and finish minor premiers.
It took some time for the locals to hit their straps with RMC holding an 8-7 lead midway through the first half.
The pace of the match was blistering with both sides choosing to attack with the ball in hand despite their field position at the time.
Boorowa posted a try 10 minutes before the half time whistle.
A snappy back line move saw Ben Corkhill put through a gap from a deft pass off the hip of Adam Mokatupo.
Boorowa’s forwards attempts at a five pointer were repeatedly thwarted by the stubborn RMC defence. The ball was pushed left across the face of RMCs line where Jono Merriman took a pass off Tom Darmody to score beside the post to give the home side a 14-11 lead at half time.
Boorowa kicked two penalties to give them a 20-11 lead before RMC lifted.
A converted try to the visitors put them within two points of the lead and had the large home crowd deservedly anxious.
At the resume of play a midfield kick found its way into the arms of Jeremy McGrath. McGrath was electric as he ran the ball back through the full weight of the RMC defence beating a number of defenders bringing the crowd to life.
He picked up Scotty Waters in support who was tackled on the RMC ¼ line where the ever-present Johno Merriman took a pass from Waters to score his second try beside the posts.
A late penalty to Boorowa put the game beyond the visitors leaving the full time score 30-18.
Best for Boorowa were Johno Merriman, Jeremy McGrath, Nathan Nash and Ben Corkhill.
Johno Merriman was voted best player by his peers on the day.
Club stalwart Adam Dewar was ecstatic after the match.
“This is one of the best performances I have seen from the side this year.
They have come up against some truly quality opposition and have come out on top.
“I’m a very proud Goldie.”
Next week sees another home game against the Crookwell Blue Heelers.
