It was fitting that the top two darts teams in town played out a highly entertaining Grand Final last Thursday night with the undefeated Ram Two side beating a plucky Rec Club gold team 5-4 in a nail bighter.
Unfortunately for the Rec Club it was their third straight runners up trophy but they left the crowd in no doubt that a title is not far away.
The first four games of singles matches were split two all with Rod Neeson and Col Oliver picking up victories for the Rec Club whilst Danny Cassell’s and Phil Johnston were narrowly beaten in their matchups.
Down 4-2 after the singles it looked as though it was only a matter of time before the Ram Two clinched the title but the Rec Club had other ideas.
Rod Neeson and Danny Cassells got the Rec club back on track with a win to make it 4-3 and make the Ram side just a little nervous.
Phil Johnston and Col Oliver then threw some superb darts to beat Darryl Bailey and Greg Ward and level the scores at 4-4.
It all came down to Mick Farrell and Ray Poplin for the Rec Club up against Steve Makings and Paul Kennedy for the Ram.
Steve produced a 180 score to put the Rec on the back foot before the Rec club clawed their way back to get down to requiring a double in the first leg. However the Ram calmly pegged out and then took the second leg to wrap up the tie by 5-4 but not before Mick and Ray gave their best in a thrilling finish.
It was two and a half hours of high quality darts that kept the small crowd enthralled to the end.
Highest score of the night went to Steve Makings who threw the perfect 180 in three darts whilst there were several other big scores over the century reflecting the high quality of the final.
Ram Two have thoroughly deserved their title and their players, who are based in Cootamundra, have breathed fresh air into the competition and certainly raised the standard amongst the local darts players.
Hopefully the will return to defend their title.
Meanwhile across town at Ex-Services club, the other grand final was underway in the B-Grade where the Rec Club Green outclassed the Ram One side to take the title by 5-1.
This was a much quicker final with only the singles matches being required to determine the match and at least ease the pain for the Rec club by taking the B-Grade title.
Tonight will see the culmination of what has been an excellent competition with the presentation evening at the Recreation Club commencing at 7pm.
A full wrap of the trophy winners will appear next week.
