Boorowa Blazers shine at State Age

22 Jul, 2010 08:21 AM
Nine local girls travelled to Newcastle on Friday, July 1 to compete in the NSW State Age Netball Championships. The Boorowa Blazers have been training for months every week and have travelled to netball carnivals across the region most weekends since April. This team have been playing together for a number of years; they have participated in the Young Netball competition for several seasons and were very keen to demonstrate their skills at a higher level of competition.

On Saturday, July 2 the Championships were opened by NSW Netball Representatives and the formal march past was conducted. The girls were the smallest group to march with only one team being represented but were extremely proud to be wearing their Boorowa colours.

They played a mammoth 18 games over the 3 days of competition. On Saturday and Sunday they played each team in the division and were placed 6th on the ladder of competition. The division comprised of 13 teams. The top 6 teams had to play off on Monday for top placing and the bottom 7 played off for their position. The Blazers confronted big centres including Armidale, Glenn Innes, Forbes, Cooma, Young and Wyalong and came up trumps. They drew with Inverell and went down to Southern Highlands and Sapphire Coast to be placed 6th in the overall competition.

Coaches Ang Gay and Trudy Mahoney and all parents are very proud of the girl’s efforts, skills and stamina to be competitive with these larger teams who have access to weekly competitions. Parents are commended for their commitment to the girls chosen sport and the coaches are gratefully thanked for their dedication to training and organisation of carnivals and the girls are congratulated for being outright fantastic netballers. Go the Boorowa Blazers you have made the town proud!

The girls will celebrate the end of their 2010 carnival season by travelling to Canberra to watch the Canberra Darters play on Friday night. The girls have been invited to spend time personally with the Darters back in the dressing room following the game. All girls are looking forward to meeting these high profile professional netballers.

The Boorowa Blazers team comprises of: Maddie Edwards, Sophie Cooper, Maryanne Carmody, Molly Stephens, Meg McIntosh, Olivia Gay, Jade Blomfield, Tiarna Allison and Taylah Cutting.
