Secondary cricket grand final win
Thompson’s Boorowa took out the Young District Cricket Secondary Grand Final at Cranfield oval in Young just prior to Easter.
In what was a fitting end to a four-year journey for some, and more for others, the result an appropriate end to a memorable season and the junior careers for six of the players.
Thompson’s started favourites due to their minor premier status but as we all know favouritism means nothing in a Grand Final.
Having won the toss and with Sam Lynam retiring for 26 after seven overs it looked like Thompson’s had written their own script but with a combination of poor shot selection and questionable umpiring decisions our boys were bundled out for 100 with six overs to spare.
Captain Christopher Dwyer was the only other batsman to reach double figures with a well-compiled 30 with Sam finishing on 35 after his return to the crease.
After a pep talk from one of the legends of Rugby Cricket teams past, the boys took to the field with the knowledge that they had the runs on the board and it was up to the bowlers to deny Wills Electric the opportunity to pass their score.
With only four runs an over to play with, deny them the opportunity they did. After 12 overs they had the opposition 3-33 with the run rate up over five per over. To their credit, Wills batted out their overs but fell 14 runs short of victory finishing at 8-87.
The team management would like, along with congratulating the boys, to thank all those involved with Thompson’s Boorowa for their generous sponsorship over the past four years.
At the Presentation that followed immediately after the Grand Final, Sam Lynam went on to take out not only Best and Fairest for Boorowa but also overwhelmingly for the entire competition, while Matthew Johnston received the coach’s encouragement award.
