Little As skills night a success

05 Nov, 2009 07:12 AM
An incredible night of learning was experienced on the first evening of the Little Athletics new initiative of skills night.

We are very grateful to so many people who assisted in making the skills night a success.

Nathaniel Coles and Nayah Freeman did a fantastic job teaching sprint techniques (with the able assistance of Judy Coles), while Lauren Sheridan made a welcome return to the track to assist in training techniques for the hurdles, along with her mum Jackie and cousin Alex.

Committee members really rose to the challenge with Aileen and Megan McInerney teaching techniques for the shotput, Di Tonpi instructing on the discus, Kylie McFadyen assisting with the mid/long distance running and Jane Caldow returning to give much appreciated assistance with the walks.

Phil McInerney showed his versatility by skipping between the triple jump and javelin and Julia Wilson and Annie Bailey assisted the children in the long jump pits.

Mikaela Basham and Riley Scelly did an awesome job showing children how to tackle the high jump bars and Mikaela has shown her versatility by switching from the tots to the older children in the high jump.

Many thanks to Steph Bouletos who was ably assisted Mikaela Basham in the first week of tots, and then rose to the challenge of running the tot program on only her second week of Little Athletics.

There are now 37 tots in the program so it is a huge feat to be able to instruct and guide that number of athletes.

It is wonderful to see so many of our higher-achieving older athletes assisting the younger children by sharing their knowledge and expertise with them.

It appears the future of Little Athletics in Young is very strong with these great younger athletes being so giving and accommodating with their time.

This week sees our first night of competition.

The night will commence at 5pm for all athletes who would like to participate in the walks, otherwise, all other events will commence at our usual time of 5.30pm.

The zone carnival will be held on December 12 and 13 at Forbes.

We will begin to take nominations for this carnival on Wednesday night.

Entry fee is $5 per athlete with athletes limited to four events.

The first three placegetters will proceed to Regionals at Finley, on the Victorian border. Please keep in mind that if you are successful at zone, there is an expectation that you will attend these regionals.

Entries remain open for Albury’s 21st Open Day until November 18, with the carnival held on November 29 at the synthetic track in Alexandra Park.
