Thompson’s Rural Supplies under 17 Cricket team came from behind to snatch a thrilling victory at the Rec ground last Saturday against Young Ag Vet.
Having lost the toss and been asked to field, the locals struggled to contain the visitors after what could at best be described as an ordinary bowling performance from the majority of the attack.
Only Murray Armour , Josh Carmody and Matt Johnson had an economy rate of four an over or less, allowing the required run rate required by Thompson’s to blow out to almost seven per over, chasing a total of 170.
Thompson began solidly but slowly and it wasn’t until the 15th over that they matched the required run rate and still with all wickets in tact, it was evident we were in for a thrilling finish. As four wickets fell under the pressure of the required run rate, with two overs to go 21 runs were required for an unlikely victory.
In a magnificent display that would have surprised no one more than the batsman themselves, cousins James Horton and Josh Carmody set about blasting the required runs with 3 balls to spare. Each batsman contributed to the impressive run chase with only two failing to reach double figures. The power hitting of the Johnson boys Cameron and Matthew, Justin Corkery and Murray Armour’s 33 not out, featuring two sixes and four fours were particularly impressive.
People must keep in mind that Thompson’s is an U17’s side that consist mostly of U14’s so it is a great effort for the likes of Josh, Greenie, Pat and Brendon to face up each week against boy’s with more age and experience then them.
After losing the two day game last week, it was a thrilling win and was particularly fitting as yet another opposing team attempted to exploit the rules to engineer victory.
Once again, thanks to Pat for umpiring and Roger for scoring, and all the parents for supporting the boys. We play in Young next week followed with a bye so the boys can enjoy the Boorowa Show weekend.
