Cricketers urged to bat and bowl against cancer in men

08 Dec, 2011 04:31 PM
Cricketers in the southern region are being urged to take part in Call To Arms and support the fight against cancer in men this summer to raise important awareness and funds towards Cancer Council’s research, prevention, information, and support programs.

Cricket clubs of all ages can get behind the campaign by dedicating a round of their summer season to Call To Arms, where players don yellow armbands for the match in a show of support. Clubs are also encouraged to run fundraising activities in conjunction with their Call To Arms round.

One in two Australian men will be diagnosed with cancer by age 85. By taking part in Call To Arms, cricket clubs in the southern region can help fight this statistic by using their skills to support and build awareness for cancer in men.

Mia Roberts at Cancer Council Southern Region said Call To Arms aims to not only raise funds for the cause, but also reach males with an important message about things they can do to reduce their risk of cancer.

“About a third of all cancers can be prevented through healthy lifestyle choices. You can cut your cancer risk by not smoking, reducing alcohol intake, eating healthily and exercising regularly,” she said.

Mia said it’s also important to remember to protect skin from the sun and slip, slop, slap especially in the coming months.

“Cricketers spend a lot of time outdoors during summer so it’s important they lead the way and adopt sun safety measures such as wearing a hat, sunglasses and sunscreen for others to follow suit,” she said.

Call To Arms is open to all ages and sports, from junior leagues up to professional clubs across all sporting codes.

If you register now, you go in the draw to win a signed bat by the NSW cricket team, the SpeedBlitz Blues.

Registered clubs receive a free Club Champions Guide which includes everything you need to know about holding a Call To Arms match.

Fight cancer. Game on. For more details or to register, visit www.calltoarms.com.au or call 1300 65 65 85.
