 Brave locals gallant in defeat

Brave locals gallant in defeat

13 Jan, 2012 09:22 AM
A patched up Boorowa cricket team gave the Aussie Hotel a huge scare last Saturday going down by 30 runs at Gus Smith Oval in Young.

With the team decimated due to players away during the silly season, a few young and not so young players gave a fine account of themselves in warmish conditions.

The Aussie Hotel won the toss and had no hesitation in batting on a good pitch and a fast outfield.

The Aussie Hotel openers took full advantage of the batting friendly conditions with openers adding 63 before Boorowa struck.

They had reached 2/94 after 20 overs and it did appear as the Boorowa could be chasing around 250. However some tight bowling for Rick Bennett with 4/27 and new comer Lochie McGuinness with 2/39 restricted the Aussie to a gettable score of 7/204.

Special mention must also go to Damo Harton who attracted the ball like a magnet in the field and saved many runs.

Old timer Pat Dwyer also laced the boots on again and took a very handy slips catch that was obviously inspired by his four days spent at the Sydney Test.

In reply, Boorowa openers Russell George and Phil Coggins got the side away to a flyer, putting on a half century stand in the first ten over’s before Russell departed.

Pyesey and Coggo then negotiated the next ten over’s of relatively tight bowling to have Boorowa at 1/84 at the halfway stage of the innings and ready to launch an onslaught.

However the best laid plans sometimes come undone and the loss of Pye the first ball after drinks saw Boorowa forced to rethink its attack.

Boorowa soon found themselves in further trouble at 5/115 with Shean, Coggins and Chris Dwyer being dismissed in quick succession.

Tom Magee playing his first game of the season then combined with Rick Bennett to take the score to 5/155 and with 49 required off the last six overs the Boorowa side was still a chance of causing an upset.

However the run rate became too great and in a bid for quick runs the wickets tumbled with the side eventually out for 174 in the 40th over.

Handy contributions were made from several players with Phil Coggins top scoring with 43.

Tom Magee made a hard hitting 29 and Russell George a handy 21.

This weekend sees the locals back home against the Criterion Shamrocks who are making a habit of claiming some big scalps lately including the Coyotes last Saturday.

The Shamrocks match is always keenly contested and played in good spirits and this Saturday will be no exception.

The locals will see the return of several regulars and will be keen for its first win in the New Year.

The match will commence at 1pm with the usual BBQ and post match drinks at the Courthouse.

See you at the ground and the pub.
