As we move into harvest mode some of the early reports are suggesting that the harvest this year is going to be a variable because of the recent weather conditions.
Canola that was windrowed over two weeks ago and has yet to be harvested, due mainly to the lack of headers, has been knocked around from the recent heavy rain and hail.
The expected yield for these crops has been reduced from two tonne to the hectare back to 1.2 to 1.4 tonne to the hectare.
Some of the later finishing canola crops should still come in around the 2 tonne to the hectare and the oil content look to be aiming somewhere between 38 per cent and the low 40’s.
On the cereal front, the crops are turning faster than first expected especially the wheat and the odd oat crops.
There is limited damage done to the cereal crops at this stage but any further unfavourable weather conditions may start to downgrade the wheat.
Yield expectations are looking promising for the most part, with the better end about five tonne per hectare and ranging back down to about three tonne per hectare.
The protein and screening levels should remain at reasonable levels for the Boorowa area but time will tell.
