TRAFFIC TURMOIL

18 Feb, 2010 06:17 AM
Boorowa’s Marsden Street road upgrade came to a halt last week after levels to a section of the road were found to be uneven.

On Tuesday February 9, staff were reviewing survey levels for the upgrade when it became apparent that the levels of the road were incorrect.

Boorowa Council Acting General Manager Therese Manns said council were currently reviewing the incident and as to why it had occurred.

“These levels were in an inconsistent wave like motion and we cannot rule out the possibility that the survey pegs had been tampered with,” Ms Manns said.

“Unfortunately this has resulted in the project being delayed by approximately one week.”

It is now expected that the road will be open to flow through traffic under traffic control early next week, with business owners and residents along the Marsden Street upgrade advised of the delay.

“The road is a state owned road, council has been working with the Roads and Traffic Authority (RTA) to determine a solution and ensure the delay is minimised and the project moves ahead as planned,” Ms Manns said.

“Whilst the RTA was reviewing the project, the paving/asphalting supplier’s were stood down until the solution was determined, to avoid costs associated with an idle plant.”

Boorowa Mayor Wendy Tuckerman said this is a large project that council are undertaking with the RTA and when finished will be highly beneficial to the township of Boorowa.

“Whilst this delay is regrettable I appreciate the patience of those affected and I am confident that council staff along with the RTA are working quickly to ensure it is minimal,” she said.

The middle strip of road is the first stage of the upgrade and when complete, the road will be open to flow through traffic under traffic control whilst council completes the side sections of the road.
