Swift action by council saves fuel

14 Feb, 2008 05:46 AM
Less than 48 hours before the proposed closure of the Boorowa Mobil service station, Boorowa Council has interceded to keep it open.

A spokesman for Mobil Australia, Alan Bailey told Boorowa News yesterday that the closure of the site was to comply with an Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) directive to remove old tanks and contaminated soil. The rehabilitation project is expected to take up to eight weeks.

According to Mr. Bailey, the site was sold in 2005 to Hill & Co. Pty Ltd with a contract clause stating that the remediation work must be carried out within three years.

“We have been approached by Boorowa Council regarding their concerns and have in turn spoken to Hill & Co. to discuss a possible delay to the closure,” Mr Bailey said. “However a final decision on timing etc. rests with Hill & Co.”

On learning of the proposed closure late last week, David Philpott, General Manager of the Boorowa Council began making enquiries about possible alternative fuel sources for the town.
