Show spirits not dampened

12 Mar, 2010 07:32 AM
The crowd may have been down but optimism from the rural sector was certainly high at the 121st Boorowa Show on the weekend.

Life member Helen McGrath officially opened the show on Saturday afternoon.

Mrs McGrath began her involvement with the show in 1984.

Oraganisers revealed that whilst the gate takings were down $1200 for the event farmers present had plenty still to smile about with reports of up to 87mm of rain since Friday.

Show president Michael Corkhill said he was happy with the show despite the lower than hoped for gate takings.

Entries in all sections were also down but the Boorowa Show Committee remained positive in light of the many improvements undertaken across the grounds in the past 12 months.

Mr Corkhill said the weather really did determine the outcome of the day but added that the showground looked a picture for the first time in years.

The show was also affected by the fact that 14 shows were held in NSW last weekend and it had to compete with the Crookwell Country weekend and the Yass Picnic Races for patrons.

Mr Corkhill said he and the committee were pleased with the renovations that had taken place.

Boorowa Shire Mayor Wendy Tuckerman and George Merriman opened new grandstand bar for drinks.

New disabled toilets and baby change rooms were also in operation for the first time.

The traditional auction held at the Sportsman’s Bar raised $800.
