Last weekend Mayor Wendy Tuckerman attended the Keep Australia Beautiful NSW Tidy Towns awards held in Dorrigo.
Boorowa was the winner of the Tidy Towns Award 2009 in the Wildlife Corridors and Habitats Conservation Award. This award was presented to Mayor Tuckerman by Doctor Lyn Webber from the Department of Environment and Climate Change for the Boorowa River Recovery Project.
“It was very exciting to be able to accept this award on behalf of the many partners and community members involved in this very successful project” Mayor Tuckerman said.
“The environmental outcomes that have been achieved and continue to be achieved is testament to the success of this project and the award recognises those efforts and the holistic approach taken by the community and project partners.”
“John Snelling has been heavily involved in Boorowa entering the Tidy Town awards and it is wonderful to see those efforts recognised.
“Unfortunately John was not able to attend the awards but was the first to know of the success.”
Mayor Tuckerman had the pleasure of ringing Lori Gould from Greening Australia, who has been the driving force behind this project, to inform her of the win and she was thrilled that the project has been recognised.
“Greening Australia is really pleased that Boorowa River Recovery won the award,” Mrs Gould said.
“It is wonderful to get recognition for all that has been achieved by a whole suite of partners.
“We would like to thank, in particular, the fantastic landholders in the Boorowa catchment who have done (and continue to do) a tremendous amount of work to improve water quality and protect the environment”.
Greening Australia would also like to thank all our project partners - the Lachlan Catchment Management Authority, TransGrid, the Boorowa Community Landcare Group, and Leane Leihn, the Australian Government and Boorowa Council.
“Many thanks also to Alcoa, the Nature Conservancy, Land and Water Australia, St Josephs School, Mt Carmel High, DPI Fisheries, Adapt 2 Eco, Cafe Brindabella, the Boorowa News and the broader Boorowa community”.
“A total of 500ha of land has been protected and/or rehabilitated along 60km of waterways across 50 properties over the last few years, however there is still plenty more to do”.
“We hope this project will go on to achieve even more in future”.
Boorowa was also Highly Commended in the category for the overall Tidy Town in NSW.
