Local world traveller, Thora Regan, the National International Secretary of the Catholic Women’s League Australia (CWLA) is off to New York, from March 2-13 to deliver a paper to the UN headquarters.
“This is the third trip where I have prepared papers and represented CWLA at the UN” Thora said.
The Theme for 2009 is “The equal sharing of responsibilities between women and men, including care giving in the context of HIV/AIDS”.
Papers reflecting on the Theme of the Year are produced by Non-Government Organizations (NGO’s) from all around the world and made available to all attendees.
Thora Regan was presented with an AM in 2007 in recognition of her services to women, particularly through CWLA and in the Boorowa Community
Having risen through the ranks to the position of National President of the CWLA.
Thora was elected to her present position in 2007.
CWLA is an accredited Non Government Organisation (NGO) and is in Consultative Roster Status with the Social and Economic Council of the UN.
Thora, who has direct contact with the World Union of Catholic Women’s Organizations (WUCWO) headquarters in France and was voting delegate on behalf of CWLA at the WUCWO Asia pacific Conference held in Seoul, South Korea in October, 2008, believes in what she is doing “it is stimulating, challenging and interesting and I count it as a privilege to be able to serve in this way” said Thora.
Thora leaves Australia on March 1 to commence the long flight to New York and is hoping the weather will be better than it has been on previous visits.
On Tuesday February 24 Thora, together with Government and Non Government Organisation representatives were invited to a reception at Government House hosted by the Governor General Quentin Bryce, prior to their pre-departure meeting the following day.
