Agronomists believe crop producers are facing their best start in almost a decade, after having 88mls of rainfall last month.
Although the amount of rain in the area varied, it has made many of the farmers smile and allowed them to start sowing the winter crop of canola.
This should be finished within the next two weeks and then the wheat crop can be sown.
Oats and tritacale, which is a hybrid of wheat and rye, crops are already in the ground.
“It would be really great if we could guarantee the follow up rain,” said Tom Corkhill, Agronomist, Boorowa Pastoral Supplies, and it looks as if that wish might be granted with a high chance of rainfall (75 per cent) towards the end of the month from about May 26 until June 2.
“Something that will have to be looked at carefully this season will be weed control,” said Mr Corkhill.
Many farmers are using the current good weather to make a start on the weed control for the crops.
Not only did April present the farmers with 88mls of rain, which mostly fell on April 14 when there was 35.5mls, the highest temperature was on April 2 when it reached 29.5 degrees and the lowest temperature was on April 29 when it got down to 1.9 degrees.
