Gearing up for public speaking comp

17 Oct, 2008 07:47 AM
BOOROWA Central School will host a public speaking competition next Tuesday, with schools from across the Riverina taking part.

The competition began in 1994 as a project for Boorowa students and has progressed from there, to now include students from Henry Lawson in Grenfell, Cootamundra, Young, Harden, Yass, Boorowa and Cowra.

The competition is supported by the Boorowa branches of Apex and CWA as well as Boorowa Shire Council.

Public Speaking Coordinator for Boorowa Central School, and founder of this competition, Debra Eustace said the competition is a great platform for students considering pursuing public speaking further, to see what it is like.

She said many students, who compete in the Boorowa competition go on to be successful in other public speaking events.

"It's a great learning ground," she said.

She said it promotes public speaking and excites students to participate further when they see the success of their peers and experience public speaking first hand.

This competition is one of only a few which allow students to speak in front of their peers, rather than to an audience of adults.

An array of medals will be on offer.

The competition is held in the school library between 9.30am and 12.30pm.
