Flock ewe comp returns next Friday

10 Feb, 2012 02:35 PM
The 24th annual Boorowa Flock Ewe Competition, proudly sponsored by the Boorowa Pastoral supplies will be held on Friday, February 17, 2012.

A total of nine flocks of maiden ewes have been entered.

Chief Steward of the event, Rick Power, said entries are down this year but he hopes they will increase next year for the 25-year-anniversary.

The day involves the judging of the breeding and management of each individual flock.

The flocks are judged on their breeding aim and type of sheep.

Confirmation, wool cut and quality, fertility, uniformity, condition and presentation are all taken into account.

The competition is certainly a great event for Producers to show their commercial flock ewes to the general public and the judges.

Breeders in the Boorowa Shire or within a 20km radius can enter their sheep to be in the running for many prizes donated from Boorowa Pastroral Supplies and other sponsors of the event.

The judges of the 2012 flock ewe competition are Chris Bowman, from Hay in the Riverina.

Chris managed Uardry Stud for many years and is now a Sheep Classer and Breeding Consultant.

The other judge is Allan McCormack of “Walwa Merino Stud” via Gunning.

Allan is very keen on his sheep breeding, running 14,000 head of sheep and a 650 head commercial beef herd on a 3,300 hectare mixed farming enterprise.

Allan was a finalist for the 2011 Young Farmer of the Year.

Spectators are invited to travel by the complementary coach to each property to inspect and watch the judging with the opportunity to discuss their own ideas and breeding objectives.

There will be a number of Sponsors and Reps on the bus with a wealth of knowledge and experience so this is a great way to ask questions, interact and learn.

The bus will be leaving Boorowa pastoral Supplies on Pudman Street at 7:20am sharp.

There will be plenty of room on the bus so feel free to take up the offer.

The bus will return to Boorowa for lunch at the Courthouse Hotel at 12noon before heading back out to inspect more flocks in the afternoon.

The day will be concluded with dinner at the Courthouse Hotel, commencing at 7pm.

The top five place getters will be announced during the evening.

They will then have a portion of their flock on display at the Boorowa Show on March 3, 2012, where prizes will be presented.

Mr Power said it’s all about finding the best sheep on the day, but it is also a great day to learn from the judges and others that interact on the day and ask questions as they go along.

He encourages all local sheep producers to come along and enjoy a social and educational day.

Organisers of the competition would like to thank the Boorowa Show Society, the Boorowa Merino Breeders Association and Boorowa Pastroral Supplies for their ongoing support.
