Not many children are able to meet their Olympic Games hero, but that’s precisely what several local children were able to do over the July school holidays.
The children not only met Melinda Gainsford-Taylor, but they were treated to a free three hour training session with the 200m 2000 Olympic Games finalist.
The ‘Speed for Sport’ clinic was offered to registered Little Athletics members as a pre-cursor to the Annual Conference and AGM that was held in Wagga Wagga on July 17-18.
Melinda was the guest speaker at the conference and spoke of her achievements, injuries, and enthusiasm at still being involved in the sport that she loves through Little Athletics. Young and District Little Athletics will be commencing their registrations on September 5, at I.G.A. Fun Day in Young commencing at 10am.
Local Boorowa representative, Peta Jenkins, is available to answer any questions that potential members may have about Little Athletics.
Although Little Athletics is based in Young, the district benefits greatly from the participation of both Boorowa and Harden athletes, who helped to bolster the numbers to 200 athletes during the 2008/2009 season. This made for some highly competitive and enjoyable Wednesday evenings in Young!
For the first time in many years, Young and District Little Athletics are participating in the school visit program.
State coaches will be visiting both St Josephs and Boorowa Central during early September to demonstrate to children the benefits of joining the Little Athletics program of ‘Family Fun and Fitness’.
