Celebrating 140 years of Worship

12 Nov, 2009 07:22 AM
On Sunday, more than 100 people attended Boorowa Uniting Church to enjoy fellowship and to acknowledge the history of “The Little Brick Church”, as it became affectionately known, and to celebrate its 140 years and the people who had worshipped there.

The Reverend Geoff Flynn, Chairman of Riverina Presbytery, led the service giving “Building on the Right Foundation” as the title of his address.

Mr Arnold Spackman gave a brief historical overview of the life of the Boorowa Church with including comments from Reverend Guthrie and Dr. Ian Smith.

Humorous anecdotes from Ian and Lindsay Johnson, sons of Reverend F J Johnson were also related.

Mr Peter Roberts, Conductor of Boorowa M and D Society, led the choir for the antiphon “Behold God’s Tabernacle” which he dedicated “to all members of the congregations, both past and present of the Boorowa Wesleyan, Methodist and Uniting Churches”.

Accompanist for the item was Mrs Mary Corcoran who also provided the harmony for the service as Mrs Phoebe Stuart was unable to play.

Representatives of Harden, Beecroft, Cootamundra and Rye Park Uniting Churches were in attendance.

The Reverend George Morrison and his wife Jess, and Geoff Blackett (son of Rev Blackett) also enjoyed the service and caught up with friends.

Present were representatives of the Morgan, Bushby, Bryce, Gruber, Grocott and Southwell families.

An apology was received from Mayor Wendy Tuckerman, Father Greg Beath, Ian and Jenny Armstrong and some of the previous Ministers, as well as many previous members of the church.

A light luncheon was enjoyed by all after the service when Esme Gruber, the oldest member of the active congregation, cut the Anniversary cake and Mr Geoff Larsen of Cootamundra responded on behalf of the visitors.
