The Boorowa community celebrated its third International Women’s Day in fine style with a full day of talks and activities for over 170 women who attended.
Mayor Wendy Tuckerman started the day and introduced Councillor Rob Gledhill, one of the sponsors and the first man to be invited to the event.
Cr Gledhill spoke about “Men Do Care”, a very emotional talk for himself and all the ladies in the audience.
Cr Gledhill was followed by Nerida Cullen, Co-Chair of Rural Womens Network State Advisory Committee, who spoke about issues of concern to rural women.
Ms Cullen is keen to get issues such as Farm Safety, Health, Education- at all levels up to university, and the difficulty of actually travelling around in rural areas, to the attention of the Committee.
Finishing her speech with the following quote, Ms Cullen described the committee as “an extraordinary group of women trying to do extraordinary things for a group of extraordinary women”.
Dr Lucy Webster gave the audience an insight into the latest research being done into breast cancer and how far the research has already come.
Diane Wallis gave a very funny talk about timing, diversity and an accidental career in the writing game with many amusing stories about her life and what she is doing in Boorowa now.
Jacinta Tynan, Boorowa’s Australia Day Ambassador, was back to talk about her book, “Good Man Hunting” , and how she came to write this book after unsuccessful love interests and thinking that she was odd by being single in her 30’s.
Roseline Deleu spoke to the audience about Feng Shui and how you can create positive energy in your home for a better life.
Llyris Short took the audience on a wonderful trip as one of the first Australian air hostesses when air travel was more luxurious.
Keren Walker spoke about the trials and tribulations of being an Outback Community nurse and the fun she had with the RFDS
After this she then had the audience up and doing some Tai Chi, as gentle exercise.
The final speaker of the day was Janeen Hosemans who had the audience listening intently as she suggested ways of coping with life today using natural remedies.
The highlight of the day was the announcement of Boorowa Most Inspiring Local Woman and the winner was Alma Corkhill who is involved with the agricultural industry and the running of her family farm, the Show Society as Secretary, the Picnic Races as Secretary, Woolfest Committee, heavily involved with her church and its community, she is a wonderful role model for her five children who are all involved in community activities, a truly inspirational woman.
