The Boorowa district claims it “breeds the best Merino sheep in Australia” and if the Great Southern Supreme Merino show’s results are anything to go by, this claim might be on the money.
Yet again the top ribbons at the GSSM show on January 21 and 22 - attended by studs from as far as Victoria - were taken out by studs from Boorowa.
The Evans family, Tara Park Merino stud, Boorowa, took out the top gong with their Marchshorn, four-tooth, medium-wool ram. This ram took out the champion March-shorn ram and grand champion ram titles earlier that day.
The Tara Park ram met some tough competition from a One Oak mediumwool ram exhibited by Graham and Mary Wells, One Oak, Jerilderie, but when it came to supreme the Tara Park ram’s toughest competition was from its stable-mate, a two-tooth, medium wool ewe, which had won junior champion and then grand ewe.
Both the supreme ram and grand champion ewe were sired by Tara Park 4202 and when put up together in the pairs class, not surprisingly took out that title too.
Held in Canberra at the weekend, the event attracted entries from more than 40 studs from across NSW and Victoria, with about 280 sheep entered in the show and 90 sale rams offered at Monday’s sale.
The Sid Walters Memorial champion sale ram title went to a superfine ram from Peter and Jayne Lette, Conrayn Merinos, Berridale, while the Roger Birtles March-shorn group award was won by Michael and Jane Corkhill, Grassy Creek Merinos, Boorowa, for the second year in a row.
