Around 1 800 people came to the races on the weekend, up from around 1 500 last year, according to Brad Smith, president of the Boorowa Picnic Race Club.
“It was a really good atmosphere. We had a lot of comments from a lot of people from out of town that it had a true picnic race feel about it. It was one of the best picnic races that a lot of people had been to,” he said.
Over 40 horses raced over six races on the day, he said.
“Everything went very smoothly. It was really good racing on the day, we had very good fields.”
The top racing prize of the day, the Dunk Insurance Boorowa Picnic Cup, was taken out by Azarax, owned and trained by Chris Heywood from Young.
Billigaboo, trained by Tricia Anderson, won the day’s second major event, the Newhaven Park Stud Picnic Sprint.
Meanwhile the Today Show’s weekend weather presenter Emma Freedman presented weather segments from the Recreation Park.
The segments featured the Boorowa Goldies and the enforcer scrum machine by Corkhills engineering, the Merryville Stud Rams with George Merriman and the races’ fashions of the field.
“They gave us a really good plug for the picnic and for the town of Boorowa,” said Mr Smith.
“It put Boorowa on the map really.”
Some spectators frocked up for the races, with around 50 entering the day’s fashion event.
The award for most elegant lady was give to Joanne Strong of Jugiong, while the best dressed gent award was given to Matthew Crowe and the best dressed junior race-goer award went to Isabella McGrath.
Meanwhile Fire and Rescue NSW’s Boorowa Station was open to the public, with visitors meeting local firefighters, and seeing a display of firefighting and rescue equipment.
