Award winner encourages community involvement

02 Feb, 2012 03:03 PM
Local resident John Snelling has clinched Boorowa Apex’s Citizen of the Year Award at the town’s Australia Day presentation last week.

Mr Snelling, involved in many of Boorowa’s organisations and activities, was awarded the honour for his dedication and commitment to the town.

“It’s a very humbling experience. You don’t put the hard yards in looking for accolades,” he said.

“In 1976 I moved to Boorowa and now I call it home.

“What you do for the community is the way you pay back for the acceptance,” he said.

Mr Snelling said he was shocked to win the award.

He stressed how much he loves Boorowa and how much the town needs people to get involved in the community to make it even better.

He has served three terms and 13 years as a councillor in local government, was the driving force behind Boorowa’s nominations and success in Tidy Towns, and is the Australia Day chairman.

The award winner was a Landcare representative involved in the Boorowa River Recovery Project, is a key member of the Woolfest committee, is a former local teacher and is a M & D Society member heavily involved in Carols in the Park.

Mr Snelling is a member of Lions, a 2LF volunteer and is a public speaking judge.

He said as Australia Day committee chairman he is pleased with how Australia Day went.

Meanwhile 300 sausages and around 250 slices of bread were dished out on Australia Day at a breakfast and lunch organised by Boorowa’s Apex club.

Brodie Stewart, president of Boorowa Apex Club, said the event was successful.

Boorowa Apex would like to remind residents that people wishing to nominate a Citizen of the Year will need to send in a “letter of nomination” to the club by 1 December 2012.
