Boorowa Central School teacher Robert Lawson has been rewarded for his efforts as a “passionate and committed teacher who strives to achieve quality outcomes for his students” by recieving an award acknowledging him as the state’s best vocational education and training (VET) teacher.

Member for Burrinjuck, Katrina Hodgkinson, visited the school on Tuesday to present Mr Lawson-also an Australian Training Awards Finalist-with his award.

“In a regional area, Robert has worked tirelessly with his network of industry contacts to organise work placements and opportunities for his students,” his nomination states.

Mr Lawson was also instrumental in the school receiving a $2, 500 grant from the NSW Environmental Trust. Secondary students will generate an educational video based on workshops devlivered by SERRROC on recycling and leadership.

The school will embed environmental sustainability into the school’s cirriculum.

The program involves the collection of composting materials from ‘fruito break’ and recycling materiels (paper). the materials will be composted and used in gardens that grow edible and ornmental plants.

A worm farm will also be established. Students will be able to track the plant’s lifecycle and monitor the benefits of composting.

Ms Hodgkinson said Boorowa Central School was “leading the way” in teaching students about healthy eating and that “fresh is best” by growing vegetables.
