Apex Citizen of the Year – one heck of an Indian

07 Feb, 2008 05:26 AM
On being announced Boorowa’s Apex Citizen of the Year, Douglas Riles’ face registered many emotions from ‘stunned mullet’ shock to ‘hole-in-one’ disbelief. The announcement came as less of a shock to the 400 or so locals who attended the event.

For many years Doug has been the unwavering backbone of so many community activities.

Working tirelessly for the Reid’s Flat Gymkhana, the Woolfest, Australia Day or the Driver Reviver, Doug’s contribution to the Boorowa Shire is truly inspirational. John Snelling, Chairman of the Boorowa Australia Day Committee said that Doug is always reliable when setting up or loading out events in the town. “He’s the one who arrives first with the low-loader, sets up the stage, checks that everything is correctly set-up and ready to go,” John said.

Assisting with Meals on Wheels and undertaking mower repairs, chopping wood and odd jobs for our local seniors is all in a days (volunteer) work for Doug.

Working quietly and without seeking any public recognition is testament to Doug’s genuine spirit of community.
