A true blue celebration ready for Boorowa

A true blue celebration ready for Boorowa

20 Jan, 2012 10:39 AM
Once again Australia Day is upon us, a day that is a holiday, but also a day on which we can celebrate what makes our country so great, when we can acknowledge the wonderful things done by fellow members of our community, when we can mingle and yarn with friends, when we can merely enjoy living where, and in the way, we do.

People from Boorowa and district are invited to join together from 8am and enjoy breakfast in the Recreation Park followed by Boorowa’s formal acknowledgement of Australia Day at 9.30. At this ceremony we will officially welcome Australia Day Ambassador Peter Herbert and family. Community awards will be presented, and we will hear words that will make us truly appreciate how lucky we are.

Speaking of our ambassador, Peter, I’ve been privileged to speak to him and he couldn’t more strongly express how delighted he and his wife are to be coming to Boorowa. They are arriving the day before and staying for two nights. I’m sure they will be made welcome in the Boorowa fashion.

Our major event is now the fishing, the pond will be well stocked with fish thanks to the efforts of the Fishing Club, so kids, all you’ve got to do is get down to the park ready to start at 8am and fish your way to some great prizes courtesy of sponsorship from Thompson’s Rural Supplies.

Other activities in the park include face painting for the children (and adults if they fancy having their faces painted), a colouring competition and that crazy duck race run by the Rotarians who have already begun selling the ducks. I supposed you’ve got to have some kind of a punt on Australia Day, why not duck racing, something different and popular.

A change this year brought on by our valued ex-service personnel is the luncheon. The Ex-Services Club was going to sponsor our ex-service personnel and partners a luncheon on both Australia Day and Anzac Day. The decision was made by the ex-service personnel to only have a luncheon on Anzac Day. The ambassador Peter and his wife will dine at the Ex-Services Club at about 12.30 on Australia Day and everyone is invited to join them in the dining room, simply let the club know you would like to partake of lunch on the day.

Afternoon activities include bowls, with Peter to roll the first bowl to get play underway at 1.30 at the Ex-Services Club, golf at 5pm at the Recreation Club and of course the ever popular Balladeers and Yarn Spinners at the Recreation Club at 4pm.

Be noted that the pool entry will be free all day, so plenty for one and all is on offer.

The Boorowa Australia Day committee is running a sausage sizzle outside IGA on Saturday next 21 January from 8.30am. We have a beaut raffle also being offered. All support helping us to put on this valued day will be most appreciated as is the valued support Peta and David of Boorowa IGA give to Australia Day each year.

Hopefully, Thursday 26 January will be a beautiful day weather-wise, and a good crowd assemble in the Recreation Park to enjoy the celebration of Boorowa’s Australia Day.
