A local couple has celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary, receiving a letter of congratulations from Queen Elizabeth II for the occasion.
Allan and Gloria Glover celebrated their milestone with family at the Ex-Services Club, marking sixty years since their wedding on 29 December 1951.
Mrs Glover described the anniversary as a great achievement.
“It is a great achievement when you think about it. It was very exciting,” she said.
They were inundated with letters and cards congratulating them on their diamond wedding anniversary from some of Australia’s highest dignitaries.
Passing on the secret to their success, Mr and Mrs Glover said a marriage will last if there is forgiveness and short term memory loss.
The couple met in 1947 at Cootamundra when the town’s rugby league team played Boorowa in the Maher Cup.
Gloria Glover nee Coble was a Boorowa local, the fifth of six daughters of Stan and Annie Coble, while her husband Allan was from Binalong, the third of four sons of Jack and Clare Glover.
The two were engaged for a year before being married at St Johns Church of England, Boorowa at 3pm.
The bridesmaids’ dress material came from Moses at the corner of Brial Rd and Court St.
Mr and Mrs Glover lived in Binalong for three years after they were married, and returned to Boorowa in 1954 for Mr Glover to play football.
They returned to Binalong where they lived until 2000, when the couple returned to Boorowa.
Mr and Mrs Glover have two children, Peter, who lives in Boorowa, and Tina, who is married to David Collins and lives in Canberra. They have one grandson, Andrew, who also lives in Canberra.
Letters also arrived for the couple from Governor-General Quentin Bryce, Prime Minister Julia Gillard, Opposition leader Tony Abbott, local federal MP Alby Schultz, local senator Fiona Nash, NSW Governor Marie Bashir, Premier Barry O’Farrell and local state MP Katrina Hodgkinson.
